Table to Table - Addressing Food Insecurity in NJ

Attorney Gregory K. Mueller earned his bachelor’s degree in international relations from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and his juris doctor from Rutgers Law School. He owns and manages the Mueller Law Group, a regional practice with offices in New York and New Jersey, growing the firm from one to eight lawyers. Active in community affairs, Gregory K. Mueller serves as a member of the borough council of Cresskill, New Jersey, and as president and board chair of nonprofit Table to Table.

When it was founded in northern New Jersey in 1999, Table to Table was the only food rescue program in New Jersey. Mentored by New York City’s successful City Harvest program, it combined the efforts of a handful of enthusiastic volunteers with a donated refrigerated van, the generosity of local chefs and four food donors, and the needs of three recipient agencies on Labor Day Weekend to bring quality food to people in need in and around Paterson.

In the ensuing 21 years, Table to Table has grown considerably, both in size and scope. It operates seven refrigerated trucks, collecting food from 150 donors and delivering it to more than 275 partner organizations in Essex, Hudson, Bergen, and Passaic Counties, serving a diverse population of individuals and families with low-income backgrounds. The food it has redistributed in that time has provided nearly 190 million meals and kept more than 61,000 tons of good food out of landfills.

Since 2010, Table to Table has expanded the scope of its activities, opening several centralized distribution hubs in Newark, Bayonne, Paterson, and Jersey City. Operated by community groups or schools, they add another dimension to the food distribution model, allowing recipient organizations to pick up food rather than wait for it to be delivered.
